The
word
Kobudo
describes
a
Martial
Arts
fighting
system
which
mainly
use
tools
as
weapons.
The
word
itself
is
build
from
the
word
Ko
(little,
or
old),
Bu
(short
form
of
Bushi,
what
means
warrior)
and
Do
(way
or
art).
So
it
can
be
translated
with
the
little
or
small
Art
of
war.
Small
or
little
because
the
weapons are not especially constructed for war. In fact some of them (Tonfa/Kama) are tools for farmer.
So the Bo, as the most famous Kobudo weapon, was for wandering or for to carry something on the back.
Though the Kobudo is focused to use weapons, of course some weaponless techniques are included.
So at least we can understand Kobudo as a Martial Art which includes everything what is usuable as a weapon, equal if it is a hammer or a fist.
